Giambattista Tiepolo - Expulsion of Hagar and Ishmael

Giambattista Tiepolo
Venezia 1696 – Madrid 1770

Cacciata di Agar e di Ismaele
Oil on canvas, cm 42 x 62

The work, oil on canvas, illustrates a biblical episode in the life of Abraham. In particular the story of the Expulsion of Hagar and Ishmael, often depicted in Italian and Dutch painting of the seventeenth century.

The canvas presents an interesting direction of light and quality. This delicate image can be placed in a stylistic context of the eighteenth century Veneto and offers interesting questions about illustrative models that inspired the author. The style of the work, in fact, immediately evokes the models of a master active in Venice in the first half of the 18th century where he perceived the influences dictated by Sebastiano Ricci, in particular that of Giambattista Tiepolo.
